Richard teaches guitar technique and music theory for both the classical and the electric guitar.
Richard teaches classical guitar to advanced level.
Starting music on the classical instrument in 1976, Richard's early professional musical activity also involved the electric guitar which he played throughout the early-mid 1980s in various amateur and professional rock and jazz groups. He maintains an interest in the electric guitar and its performers.
In 1994 he finished performance Diploma Music in classical guitar performance at the Auckland University School of Music.
1994-97 he held a principal guitar teaching position at the Music Education Centre in Glenfield, Auckland. He also taught in the Centre's Music in Schools programme and performed regularly throughout Auckland.
In 1998 Richard established and managed the Christchurch School of Guitar. Whilst in Christchurch Richard taught guitar in schools, both privately and for the Ministry of Education.
Richard is an Associate Member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand and served on its Christchurch Branch Committee 1999-2003.
Richard has over two and a half decades of professional performance experience, including public and private concerts, festivals, musical theatre productions, appearances with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Southern Ballet, Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, recordings for broadcast by local radio and television stations.
He moved to Kerikeri in 2012.
Richard believes in providing young beginners with the best possible foundation for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. He is a strong advocate of offering guitarists the opportunity to learn to read standard musical notation as part of that musical education.
